Becoming a True Disciple of Christ: A Practical Approach to Everyday Life

01-30-2016AllFr Steve

This mission of the Church includes encouraging us all to do “good works” in service of others. Our involvement in service projects; participation in church activities and ministries; and, donating to charitable causes is good, necessary and pleasing to God. However, these actions alone do not encompass true discipleship.

Our Christian identity cannot just be compartmentalized into one or two “charitable slots” in our lives. A true, Christian identity impacts everything. Being a Christian is not something we do - it is who we ARE! This approach turns everything we do into something that builds up His Kingdom and gives true meaning to our lives. It may sound difficult, but living this way is actually easier than you might think - mainly because it is God’s true desire for us all.

Adopting a motto that reminds you of your Christian identity and mission can be a very helpful tool. You should write it on your calendar or agenda; carry it in your wallet; type it into your cell phone or make it your screen saver, so it can serve as a constant, visual reminder that we are first and foremost Christians. The hope is that keeping this motto “top of mind” will help each of us act like Christians in moments of decision, temptation or opportunity.

One of my favorite mottos is: "God First, Others Second, Me Third." It is so simple, so powerful and so Christian!

God First

- because every branch that is cut off of the vine dies; without Him, we can do nothing.

Others second - because I was made to love my neighbor as Christ has loved me, to respect them and come to their aid.

Me third – because I am called to be like Jesus, who was willing to give up His own life in order to obey His Father's will and pay the price for others' sin.

During this Mass, adopt a motto for the week – one that will help you see and embrace the mission that God has given you.  And, when Jesus comes to you in Holy Communion, ask Him for the strength to live out that motto.

Christ’s Blessings
